Division Director, Magnet Science & Technology

Job ID: 57514

Location: Tallahassee

Application Deadline: Open until filled

The National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (MagLab) in Tallahassee, FL, seeks the next Director of its Magnet Science and Technology (MS&T) Division. MS&T’s primary mission is to ensure that the MagLab provides users with world-leading magnetic fields. The MagLab presently has the highest fields worldwide for several classes of magnets: non-destructive pulse – 100 T, 1-second duration pulse – 60 T, resistive/superconducting hybrid – 45 T, DC resistive – 41 T, condensed-matter NMR – 36 T, superconducting – 32 T, neutron scattering – 26 T, and MRI – 21T. MS&T operates jointly with the MagLab’s Applied Superconductivity Center to develop and build next-generation superconducting magnets and with the MagLab’s Pulsed Field Facility (located at Los Alamos National Laboratory) to build next-generation resistive pulsed magnets. MS&T is also responsible for maintaining and upgrading the magnets operated by the MagLab DC Field Facility.

The MS&T division includes thirty-five permanent employees, including materials scientists, engineers, technicians, and administrative personnel. MS&T has many magnet development capabilities, including materials development and characterization, conceptual design, electro-thermal-mechanical computation, mechanical design, fabrication, and testing. The new Director will manage these resources in accordance with the goals and priorities of the MagLab.

The MS&T Director will develop and articulate a multidisciplinary, long-term vision for the division while sustaining major ongoing activities that include:

  1. Development of high-field magnets based on REBCO superconductor,
  2. Developing materials for next-generation pulsed magnets ranging from 65 T to >100 T
  3. Design, fabrication, and maintenance of pulsed and DC resistive magnets and large coils for 100T and 60T Pulsed Magnets at Los Alamos

The successful candidate will be highly motivated and eager to work creatively in a multidisciplinary team environment toward fostering a deep understanding of new magnet technologies and realizing specific magnets. The MS&T Director will analyze projects and monitor and approve budgets for these projects and overall operating costs for the department. The Director will also monitor, plan, and implement improvements to magnet technologies. The successful candidate will regularly speak at annual meetings of MagLab users, review committees, and external experts in magnets and their applications, write proposals for new projects, and communicate periodically with funding agencies.

The successful candidate will be an engineer or scientist with an established reputation in their field. Minimum qualifications include an earned Ph.D. in Engineering, Physics, or a related field, at least ten years of experience developing and managing relevant technology and material projects, or a M.S. and at least 15 years of experience. The MS&T Director must demonstrate strong leadership and interpersonal skills, a substantial publication and grantsmanship record, excellent spoken and written communication skills, and the ability to interact constructively with scientists, engineers, designers, technicians, and administrative personnel. The ability and willingness to attract and retain appropriate personnel and advance the lab’s safety culture are also required. The candidate must balance MagLab research and development efforts with MagLab end-user requirements and operational realities.

Interested candidates should apply to Florida State University (FSU) job site at FSU Jobs and search ID 57514. For additional information, please contact Ms. Bettina Roberson, National High Magnetic Field Laboratory, Florida State University, 1800 E. Paul Dirac Drive, Tallahassee, FL 32310-2740.
