Vibrating Sample Magnetometry in DC Fields

A vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) is used to measure DC magnetic susceptibility and DC magnetization. The VSM utilizes the Faraday’s Law to measure absolute magnetic moment of a magnetic sample.

The sample is vibrated at 87 Hz with 0.2 mm amplitude inside a pickup coil. A voltage (emf) is induced across the pickup coil, which is proportional to the magnetic moment * vibration frequency * vibration amplitude. A phase sensitive detection technique is used to measure the induced voltage, which is then converted to absolute magnetic moment using a pre-calibrated relation of the signal of a known standard (usually ferromagnetic Ni sphere)
