Title: What is the Quantum Science Center

Host: Science Council’s MagX Presentation

Discussion Leader: Boris Maiorov

Abstract: I will talk about the Quantum Science Center, which is one of the five DOE-funded National Quantum Initiative Centers. I am the deputy director, and the lead institution is Oak Ridge National Lab, however it encompasses 17 institutions and 250 PIs. One focus of the Quantum Science Center is to systemically explore how we can find topological superconductors and Kitaev spin liquids and use them to create topological qubits. Whereas existing quantum computing efforts suffer from high noise/decoherence of quantum information, the topological approach hopes to exploit the inherent stability of topological protection in many-body interacting systems. The QSC also has a thrust devoted to quantum algorithms for science, and quantum sensing for dark matter.
