Title: LANL’s Pulsed Power Generator: (Un)fortunately both my monkey and my circus [1]
Host: Science Council's MagX Presentation
Discussion Leader: Laurel Winter
Abstract: The Los Alamos National Laboratory 1.4 gigawatt [2] motor-generator provides unique pulsed power capabilities that have proved essential for maintaining the MagLab’s world leadership. Specifically, the unmatched ability to shape and synchronize multiple multi-second current pulses to deliver hundreds of megajoules of electrical energy has enabled the design and sustained operation of the 60 T Long-Pulse and 100 T non-destructive [3] magnets. In this talk I will give an overview of the pulsed power systems that have made these magnets so scientifically fruitful [4] a`nd discuss the major 5-year repair, maintenance, and upgrade projects underway at the Pulsed Field Facility.
I will attempt to share a little of what I’ve learned about managing the competing priorities at the intersection of academic research, international industrial manufacturing, and even geopolitical bureaucracy, throughout this period of sustained institutional investment. Whilst this story is yet complete, the imminent [5] conclusion will herald an exciting new era of high-field scientific opportunity.
