Technical Research Designer - Machine Shop

The National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (National MagLab) in Tallahassee, FL is seeking a Technical Research Designer to assist in operating machine shop equipment to produce parts both Manual and NC within precision tolerances following engineering drawings, sketches and verbal instruction. Machine and assemble instrumentation, tools, and other equipment. Program NC equipment with solid modeling software. Assist with the design and fabrication of components and work with a wide range of mechanical components. Assist users in the development and timely design of instrumentation, tools and other equipment. Communicate with various laboratory personnel with a wide range of technical experience. Work with users and other lab personnel to safely use equipment and demonstrate techniques of machining simple tools, appliances, etc.

Bachelor's degree in a related area; or a high school diploma/equivalent and four years of mechanical experience. (Note: post-high school education can substitute for experience at the equivalent rate.) Experience with manual machining or skills in programming and operation of CNC machines. Experience working with different types of materials and ability to safely operate machinery, tools, and equipment. Ability to problem solve and troubleshoot mechanical issues. Ability to interpret technical and artistic designs and create a final product. Ability to interact with laboratory scientists, researchers, and engineers with diverse backgrounds.
