The National High Magnetic Field Laboratory seeks candidates for a Scientific Research Specialist position. The position is responsible for the day-to-day machining, development, and design of instrumentation and accessories in support of the NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) facility at the MagLab. Programs CNC machine tools and utilizes other machine shop equipment to fabricate complex instrument components by following specifications with close tolerances. Works closely with NMR facility users and staff, interpreting their ideas in order to design and build functional hardware which accomplishes scientific goals envisioned by the researchers. Analyzes mechanical problems. Documents design revisions in 3D and 2D CAD software. Assists in final assembly and testing of instruments. Maintains technical knowledge and expertise of all specialized equipment in order to identify short- and long-range instrumentation needs. Some job training will be available to the qualified candidate.
A Bachelor's degree and two years of experience; or high diploma/equivalent and experience equal to six years. (Note: post-high school education can substitute for experience at the equivalent rate.) Experience with programming and operation of CNC equipment using CAM software and solid models. Experience with operating manual toolroom machinery.
Ability to develop a wide range of complex components for laboratory instrumentation. Ability to fabricate a wide variety of materials - metals, plastics, and composites. Knowledge of CAM computer software and operating systems. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Preferred Qualifications: Experience with 3D CAD software such as Autodesk Inventor or Solidworks; ability to design with 3D models and generate component drawings using above mentioned software; and ability to work to tolerances of five microns.
