MS&T Postdoc (Multiple Positions)

Location: Tallahassee

Application Deadline: Open until filled

The Magnet Science and Technology Division of the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (NHMFL) is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to perform electromagnetic, mechanical, and thermal analyses using numerical methods to help design the next-generation superconducting magnets.  Development of these systems requires experience and proficiency in 2-D and 3-D Finite Element Analysis and a strong understanding of structural mechanics, heat-transfer, and electromagnetism.  The candidate must have good written and verbal communications skills and the ability to interact constructively with physicists, engineers, designers, and technicians.  It is expected that results will be presented at international conferences and published in peer-reviewed journals.

Responsibilities include Conduct electromagnetic, structural, and thermal analyses on existing or new superconducting magnets.  Create magnet designs based on high temperature and/or low temperature superconductors for prescribed requirements of field strength, uniformity, and other operating conditions. Model components or systems utilizing commercial finite element software (ANSYS, Vector Fields, COMSOL) and in-house FORTRAN and MATLAB codes. Document engineering designs through written reports and presentation materials

Qualifications include a Ph. D. in engineering or physics.  Experience with finite element modeling using ANSYS, COMSOL, or Vector Fields.  Capable of programming in ANSYS APDL, FORTRAN, and MATLAB. Familiar with the general properties and issues of REBCO superconductors.

The National High Magnetic Field Laboratory is a state of the art facility for the engineering, development, and operation of high field magnet systems for scientific research.  The only facility of its kind in the United States, the NHMFL is the largest and highest-powered magnet laboratory in the world, headquartered in a sprawling 370,000-square-foot complex near Florida State University in Tallahassee. The lab also includes sites at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico and the University of Florida in Gainesville.

Interested candidates should apply to Florida State University (FSU) job site at FSU Jobs and search  ID 56449 . For additional information, please contact Ms. Bettina Roberson, National High Magnetic Field Laboratory, Florida State University, 1800 E. Paul Dirac Drive, Tallahassee, FL 32310-2740, roberson@magnet.fsu.edu. Position is listed as Open Until Filled and applications are reviewed when received. The NHMFL is operated for the National Science Foundation by a collaboration of institutions comprising Florida State University, the University of Florida, and Los Alamos National Laboratory.
