The National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (MagLab) is an interdisciplinary and international scientific gem with three partnering institutions (Florida State University, University of Florida, and Los Alamos National Laboratory). Scientists and staff use high magnetic fields to contribute to breakthroughs in physics, materials science, engineering, chemistry, geochemistry, biochemistry, and biology.
The MagLab strives to develop a deep understanding of, and respect for, equity and inclusion among students and colleagues. We recognize the importance of decolonizing our educational system and strive to build inclusive systems through the exploration of many truths and lived experiences, creating room for those who are often excluded. We approach equity, social justice, and cultural responsiveness as cross-cutting themes in departmental policy and practice, program curriculum, and faculty and student research. The Department enrolls a sizable and diverse population of students, faculty and staff. We seek a colleague to mentor across the MagLab, with a particular focus on mentoring a diverse group of students and postdocs and engaging with faculty to help them in their mentoring efforts.
The educational and mentoring goals of the MagLab are run through the Center for Integrating Research and Learning (CIRL). One of the major missions of the MagLab is to build a diverse STEM workforce, which is dependent on strong quality mentoring. The Mentoring Director position will help the MagLab to reach its goal. This position will be in the Center for Integrating Research and Learning housed at the MagLab facility in Tallahassee. The MagLab recognizes the value of mentoring that the National Academies of Science, the National Institute of Health, and the National Science Foundation place on mentoring. Therefore, the expectations of this position will include a research focus on mentoring and running mentoring programs for early career students and postdocs. The candidate will run mentoring programs for the MagLab, which include the College Internship program, the Research Experiences for Undergraduate Program, the Graduate student and Postdoc professional development and mentoring programs. The employee will participate in the development of research-based mentoring best practices for all early career scientists with a focus on the mentoring of students from underrepresented groups including, but not limited to: students of color, first generation college students, students with disabilities, and women.
The candidate is expected to participate proactively in other functions of the Lab, including, but not limited to: committee participation, mentorship of students and postdoctoral researchers, and community outreach. The successful candidate will pursue outside funding for personal, independent and/or collaborative research efforts that utilizes and improves the capabilities of mentoring at the MagLab, and engage in the broader discipline through serving on committees, reviewing journal publications, etc.
- Academic Master’s degree or highest level terminal degree in Education or a STEM discipline from an accredited institution and five years of mentoring experience.
- Demonstrated record of achievement in research and experience running mentoring programs.
Ph.D. in Education or a STEM discipline and two years of experience mentoring preferred.
