Core Research Facility Manager - University of Florida

Location: Gainesville

Application Deadline: September 2, 2024

The Advanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Spectroscopy (AMRIS) Facility at the U.S. National High Magnetic Field Laboratory and University of Florida seeks a scientist specializing in biomolecular solution NMR spectroscopy for the permanent research staff position of AMRIS Facility Manager of solution-state NMR instrumentation for biomedical applications.

Minimum qualifications include a PhD degree or equivalent in Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, Pharmacology, Biophysics, Biochemistry, or Structural Biology with demonstrated expertise in techniques of high-field solution NMR spectroscopy and their applications to studies of natural products, metabolomics, or biological macromolecules. Experience in instrument calibration, pulse sequence execution, data acquisition, and data analysis is needed. Experience with NMR-based approaches frequently used in biomedical research, e.g., natural products elucidation, NMR peak assignment methodologies, quantitation of metabolites, measurement of ligand binding affinities, and NMR-based analysis of protein dynamics, is encouraged.

The AMRIS Facility houses state-of-the-art 500-800 MHz NMR systems, 7-17.6 T preclinical MRI/S scanners, research-dedicated 3T clinical MRI/S scanners, and polarizers to enable both basic and translational biomedical research. Full details on the Facility can be found at amris.mbi.ufl.edu. The successful candidate will be primarily responsible for high-field solution NMR applications on vertical bore 600 and 800 MHz NMR systems in the AMRIS Facility. The successful candidate will be expected to collaborate with AMRIS Facility staff to maintain optimal instrument performance and standard protocols for solution NMR spectroscopy to provide support for researchers at the University of Florida as well as external users through the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (National MagLab) users program.

The position includes the responsibility of recruiting new users to the facility through various outreach avenues both on campus and at national meetings. This position offers unique opportunities to contribute to the development of cutting-edge research ongoing in the NMR spectroscopy program in the AMRIS Facility and the MagLab and to conduct independent and collaborative research projects. The position will be based in Gainesville, but will involve a close relationship with the NMR Spectroscopy Program at the MagLab in Tallahassee, so occasional travel to that site will be expected. Ongoing research in the Facility includes the development and application of NMR spectroscopy to biological, biomedical, chemical, and material science research projects and the development of novel spectroscopy and polarization enhancement methods. Candidates with an interest in the application of cutting-edge NMR methods to solving biomedical and biological problems are highly encouraged to apply. The successful candidate must exhibit strong abilities in customer service and time management skills.

Specific job requirements:

  • Responsible for coordinating, scheduling, and ensuring proper utilization of research facilities.
  • Recommend and implement operating policies and procedures in the AMRIS Facility.
  • Keep abreast of current developments and ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations.
  • Recruit new users to the AMRIS Facility through various outreach avenues, both on campus and at national meetings
  • Plan and participate in research projects.
  • Help direct and modify research plans.
  • Develop methods and techniques for, and evaluate the results of, experiments or studies.
  • Prepare and review manuscripts for publication and presentation at scientific meetings.
  • May serve as a liaison between the AMRIS Facility, outside agencies, and the general public.

Applications will be evaluated beginning August 26. A full job description and application can be found at jobs.ufl.edu, job no. 532584 (explore.jobs.ufl.edu/en-us/job/532584/core-rsch-facility-manager). For additional information on the position, please contact Dr. Joanna R. Long, or Dr. Matt Merritt. The University of Florida is an Equal Opportunity/Access/Affirmative Action Employer.
