What You Will Do

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) has an immediate opening for a scientifically excellent and highly motivated R&D scientist for experimental physical science in ultra-high, pulsed magnetic fields. This position is in the Pulsed Field Facility (PFF), which is the Los Alamos branch of the U.S. National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (NationL MagLab). We run a scientific user program that allows qualified researchers from around the world access to some of the strongest magnets available anywhere, from our standard 65 T short-pulse magnets to the mammoth 100 T multi-shot magnet. The main purpose of our work is to understand how materials respond to extremely high magnetic fields and use that knowledge for basic research. Major scientific themes of current interest include quantum matter, strongly correlated electron systems, topological materials, superconductivity, two-dimensional materials, magnetic materials, actinide science, and new systems for quantum information science.

The work for this position is a mixture of scientific support of external users of our facility, cutting-edge measurement technique development, and discovery science.

You will develop in-depth knowledge in pulsed-field experimental physical science and use that knowledge to help scientific users – from initial contact with researchers formulating new ideas, through design and execution of experiments, to publishing results. You will have significant intellectual opportunity through user collaboration and substantial independence by setting your own scientific agenda. You will be part of the team doing science in the world’s most powerful magnets. Work includes contributing to overall PFF planning and operations, collaboration development, and fund raising through proposal submission and program development. You will work in a dynamic team environment where communication, teamwork, initiative, and follow through are essential. This position is a fabulous opportunity for a relatively junior researcher (LANL Scientist Level 2) to establish a strong scientific reputation, publish in high-impact journals, develop new experimental capabilities, and extend the applicability of high magnetic field research to new classes of materials.

Required Capabilities:

  • Ability and inclination to excel at scientific user support.
  • Record of scientific publication commensurate with experience.
  • Ability to become an intellectual leader in high magnetic field science.
  • Experience with cryogenic systems and measurements in cryogenic environments.
  • Experience developing, testing or using complex measurement systems for physical science, engineering, or a related field.
  • Ability and inclination to contribute to a wide range of basic-research and mission-science programs as needs and opportunities evolve with time.

Required Education and/or Experience:

  • Position requires a bachelor’s degree in condensed matter physics, materials science, materials chemistry, or related field from an accredited college or university and 4 years of related experience, typically with post-doctoral research experience at a university or national lab or equivalent experience directly related to the occupation. PhD preferred.

Desired Capabilities:

  • Research experience in condensed matter physics, high magnetic fields, or pulsed magnetic fields.
  • Experience with a novel measurement technique with potential high-impact for pulsed high magnetic field science.
  • Experience with user support at scientific user facilities.
  • Experience initiating scientific projects through collaboration development or proposal process.
  • Experience mentoring junior personnel.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance (generally requires US citizenship).

Additional Information

This open position is in the Pulsed Field Facility (PFF), the Los Alamos branch of the U.S. National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (MagLab). Organizationally at LANL, we are part of the Materials Physics and Applications Division (MPA). Our group’s responsibilities include the operation of pulsed magnets with peak fields up to 100 tesla; precision measurement of materials properties in pulsed fields (e.g. magnetization, resistivity, length or volume change, optical spectra, thermal parameters, etc.); instrumentation to control sample environments (e.g. inert atmosphere or vacuum, low or high temperature, high pressure or strain); and safe operation of experiments with potential for explosive failure. The NHMFL is a scientific user facility dedicated to basic research, with initiatives in materials, energy, and life sciences. The primary sponsor of the NagLab PFF at LANL is the National Science Foundation (NSF), with additional support from the Department of Energy (DOE).

LANL provides unique capabilities for the MagLab PFF: the 1.4 gigawatt pulsed power generator, the 60 Tesla Long-Pulse Magnet (60T LPM), the 100 Tesla Multi-Shot Magnet (100T MSM), several capacitor-bank-driven pulsed magnets with peak magnetic fields of 60-75T, and state-of-the-art diagnostic capabilities for materials science research. The 100 T MSM holds the world record for the highest magnetic field for a non-destructive magnet. In addition to supporting scientific users from around the world, the PFF develops magnet technology and advances science and technology using high magnetic fields in support of NSF, DOE and LANL goals.
