The National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (Maglab) at Florida State University is inviting applicants for an Assistant/Associate-in-Research position (depending on experience) in experimental condensed matter physics and materials science with an emphasis on optical spectroscopy at low temperatures and high magnetic fields.to support cutting-edge research on the quantum materials of the future.

The Maglab is the world's premier magnet laboratory with state-of-the-art high magnetic field facilities (up to 32T in superconducting magnets, 41T in resistive DC magnets, 45T in hybrid DC magnets) for research in physics, materials science, engineering, chemistry, geochemistry, biochemistry, and biology. These unique capabilities attract visiting researchers (users) from around the globe who rely on efficient, successful experimental runs during their scheduled magnet time.

The position is in the Maglab DC-Field User Program. The successful candidate, working closely with in-house scientists and visiting scientists (users), will be supporting Maglab's world-class high-field user program with a focus on high-field optical magneto spectroscopy, contribute to the development of advanced optical-spectroscopy experimental techniques that push the limits of research at high magnetic fields and low temperatures.

Responsibilities

  • Install and support user experiments - Work with users, in-house scientists, engineers and technicians to set up optical spectroscopy apparatus, custom probes, and data acquisition as required for specific experiments while meeting stringent low-noise requirements.
  • Design, construct, and maintain scientific apparatus - Collaborate with in-house engineers and technicians to design, assemble, and maintain optical-spectroscopy setups and hardware, including sample probes and sample platforms.
  • Train and mentor users - Instruct external users and new staff on safe operation of optical spectroscopy equipment as well as cryostats, magnet systems, cryogen handling, and relevant safety procedures.
  • Perform administrative functions -Analyze facility needs and plan facility developments. Select, purchase, and track instrumentation and consumables; maintain accurate logbooks, calibration records, and preventive-maintenance schedules.

Qualifications

Ph.D. in Physics, Chemistry or Engineering with previous post-doctoral experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Substantial expertise in CW VIS optical spectroscopy (broad-band, Raman, photoluminescence, ... ) in the context of condensed matter physics.
  • Substantial hands-on experience with development of CW VIS optical spectroscopy setups and with measurements at low temperatures (down to He4 temperatures) and high magnetic fields.
  • Substantial hands-on experience with installation, safe use, maintenance and troubleshooting of optical spectroscopy equipment (lasers, spectrometers, imaging systems, polarization and micro-motion control, fiber-based optics, etc ... )
  • Aptitude for installation, safe use and maintenance, and troubleshooting general scientific laboratory equipment (vacuum, electronic systems, etc...)
  • Ability to work effectively in a diverse, fast-paced research environment of the DC-Field User Program - a solution-oriented attitude towards the success of user experiments is a must.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to safe work practices and willingness to support and enhance the Maglab's high-level safety culture.
  • Ability and willingness to work shift schedules and participate in limited on-call rotation when (rarely)
  • Experience with other types of low-temperature measurements at high magnetic fields (>10T), including, for example: fast, time-resolved, and non-linear spectroscopy, FTIR and ESR optical spectroscopy, magnetization, electrical transport.
  • Experience operating He3 cryogenic systems at high magnetic fields and integrating experimental probes and techniques.
  • Proficiency with instrument control and data acquisition programming systems (LabView, Python, ... ) and data analysis software
  • Proficiency with CAD software, optical design software, 3D printing, basic electronics prototyping.
  • Prior experience authoring standard operating procedures and conducting safety
