The vibrations this generator produces would destroy anything you tried to place it on (including the bedrock of the Earth). The generator instead rests on a massive spring system with an empty basement floor below it. When the generator is running, you can place your hands on the pictured walls and floors and feel them vibrating.
The generator powers the MagLab's pulsed magnets.
